The best place to live ?  13 September 2006

HUTTON Cranswick has been named best village in a competition which pitted East Yorkshire villages against each other.   Judges unanimously awarded the Wolds village the title after being impressed by the community spirit displayed by residents.
Gina Simpson, co-ordinator of the entry and of Hutton Cranswick in Bloom, said the win was down to the co-operation and enthusiasm of villagers.
"I think what helped us to victory was the fact that we managed at very short notice to get together a lot of representatives from the village who were prepared to stand up and say a bit about what their organisation does."
But she admits it has been hard work organising Hutton Cranswick's entry for the Calor Village of the Year for England competition and for Yorkshire in Bloom, for which the village won a Silver Gilt award in the large village category.
"This was the first year we entered the Calor Village of the Year for England. It was challenging but we did it. We were really pleased to win and it was absolutely out of the blue."

Judges said of the competition: "The standard of entries was very high so we had a difficult task selecting the winners.
We have awarded prizes to villages that really shone in a particular area, but to win the overall title, Hutton Cranswick was consistently impressive across all six categories and showed great community spirit and collective engagement during our visit."
Villages including Gilberdyke, Wawne and Seaton presented their communities to judges from Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council who looked at aspects such as building community life and business in the community.
After being voted the Humber and Wolds winner, Hutton Cranswick will represent the county in the northern England round for a chance to go through to the final.
Mrs Simpson must now help to put together another entry for the second round which is to be submitted by the end of November.
It will go head-to-head with winners from Cheshire, Cumbria, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland, Tees Valley and Yorkshire for a chance to win £2,000. The top prize for the national winner is £7,000.
