Conservation & recycling

There is a bottle bank in the station car park. Every effort is made to keep this tidy and to discourage villagers from leaving behind plastic bags or cardboard boxes, after dumping their bottles. All residents have been provided with a blue bin for recycling papers, tins and plastic bottles.

Cranswick in Bloom supports the recognised conservation areas and uses influence, where appropriate, to help retain the historic character of the village. The Street Scene initiative has been notified that the telephone boxes need repainting, to preserve them for the future.

Local environmental quality

During 2005, the Parish Council installed new litter bins at the end of Monk’s Walk and part way down Sheepman Lane. These bins have helped to reduce the amount of litter, especially dog faeces, in these areas. Also to help combat dog fouling in the village, in February volunteer residents spray-painted bright yellow dog stencils on the pavements to encourage responsible dog owners to ‘Clean it up’.

Regular efforts are made to clear litter from the streets, the green and the railway station. The Street Scene initiative is used for the removal of unsightly spray-painting, repair of street signs, etc.

Competitions

Competitions encourage the involvement of village residents. The sunflower competition, in particular, creates interest among the youngsters. By this time, there should be sunflowers shooting up in all village gardens!

First prize in the spring competition for two or more adjacent houses went to 6–10 Main Street, Cranswick.

The award for the most attractive spring planter went to 15 Orchard Lane, Hutton, where three stunning hayracks adorned an old outbuilding wall.
