A Blooming Good Result – Silver Gilt!

‘Silver Gilt Rose Award’ – what does it really mean? It means that out of seventeen entries in the Large Village Category of Yorkshire in Bloom, Hutton Cranswick was placed second along with Barwick in Elmet, Harthill with Woodall, Helmsley, Osgodby and Oughtbridge. We gained between 150 and 169 points out of a possible 200. The Gold Award this year went to Shadwell (near Leeds).

Our sincere thanks go to everyone who contributed towards this admirable achievement. The Judges commented that: ‘This village is fortunate to have an enthusiastic In Bloom group with such a dynamic leader. There can be no doubt that they are the driving force behind the obvious shared community vision and effort which produces such an attractive overall effect’. Gina Simpson and Sue Jackson were delighted to receive the Silver Gilt Award on behalf of Hutton Cranswick at the recent presentations in Bradford. The certificate will be displayed in the WI Hall.

Although we didn’t win any additional Discretionary Awards this year, the judges did make complimentary remarks about

 the War Memorial

 St Peter’s Church

 the station

 Gatehouse Lake

 the display of vintage tractors

the junction of Main Street and the A164.

They were impressed by the ‘high standard of floral planting throughout the whole village. Private and communal areas, as well as commercial premises, showed many floral displays in terms of hanging baskets and planters. Indeed, the butcher’s shop could have been mistaken for a florist’ !

There are some suggestions for enhancing our entry next year, these include the siting of ‘interpretative boards at Gatehouse Lake and Centenary Wood  ... to increase knowledge of, and respect for, wildlife and wildflowers.’

We will not be resting on our laurels during the winter months. We will be planning next year’s planting and developments. Discussions will begin on 4 October, 7.30pm at 57 Main Street, anyone interested in contributing in any way will be welcome.

Fund-raising is another aspect of In Bloom activity. Our thanks go to Joan Wilkie and the WI for donating £166 from a recent Pig Bingo evening. Another event to look forward to will be Carol Singing on the Green!

Imagine a crisp winter evening, a band playing, a glass of mulled wine, mince pies and joyful singing – all on the delightful setting of Hutton Cranswick Village Green! (See next month’s Bulletin for more details.) All funds raised will go towards next year’s Yorkshire in Bloom entry. Let’s go for Gold!
